We all want the best weight loss techniques and tricks available, and supplement companies are constantly bombarding us with information about why their product is the best. Recently, white kidney bean extract has made quite a splash with claims that it can really help people lose fat fast. I was interested in learning more and I decided to take a look at the scientific evidence to find out if this product had been rigorously tested.

The product is extracted from white kidney beans and it acts to block an enzyme that helps the body break down carbohydrates, so that the carbohydrate will pass through your system without being absorbed. This can help with weight loss because those calories are not utilized and this helps create a larger caloric deficit. But, does it really work like it's supposed to?

The short answer is, yes, the product has been shown to cause a decrease in the absorption of carbohydrates in the human body. But, does this decrease in absorption really have benefits for blood sugar control and weight loss? Do people who take the product lose more weight than if they would just diet and exercise without the supplement?

Most of the studies that show a large benefit to people taking white bean extract also put people on high carbohydrate diets or only administered the supplement after high carbohydrate meals. These studies show a significant effect of white bean extract. But, the few studies that administered the product along with a healthy diet and exercise plan showed much less difference in results. This is because, since the product works to stop the absorption of carbohydrates, a person eating significantly less processed carbohydrates will not gain the same benefit as someone who isn't controlling their diet.

Now, it's important to understand that in the trials where people dieted and exercised, they still saw a small increase in weight loss over those who did not have the supplement, about 1.25 pounds per month. Does this effect justify its cost? I don't think it does, even at only $20/month, especially when you could just eat a few less carbohydrates or exercise a little more.

Remember, when choosing to use any supplement, find out what possible side effects you may experience and keep an eye out for them. No amount of extra weight loss is worth damaging your health! There are thousands of supplements out there, and only a few of them are really worth the money. Good luck!
